Textured Pinch Pot Sculpture
Your Mission: Create two to three pinch pots attached together to form a single sculptural form. Your pinch pots should include texture over the entire surface.
Vocabulary: bisque, clay, green ware, joining, kiln, modeling, pinch, score, slip, stick, pulling a handle, wedging
Materials: Clay, different tools for texture and scoring and slip Steps: Phase 1 - Planning - Research multiple objects with texture, including shapes from other artists (15)
- Brainstorm & Draw
- 5-6 well developed drawings exploring texture
- Demonstration: Creating a mock up
- Create a mock up of the structure using the intended construction plans
- Egg size pot
- Try a few different options or varieties of pots with textures
Dimensions & Requirements: - 2-3 pinch pots
- Hand built techniques; pinch
- 1/2 texture over entire surface:
- textures may be a repeated pattern
- textures may use a pattern that changes as it moves over the surface
- negative spaces may be incorporated into your form
- you may use more than one texture but they must relate to one another.
- A foot that enhances your form, lifts it above the flat surface and stabilizes the form
- Form is completed in shoe polish or other medium that enhances your form
Phase 2 - Construction - Get clay
- Wedge clay
- Begin by making your two or three pinch pots
- All walls should be even in thickness
- Once all your pinch pots are made, arrange them the way you have in your mock up to create an original form with an overall shape intriguing to the viewer.
Remember: • Clay must remains moist during construction • Walls must be even in thickness • Interior of pinch pots are smooth • Seams are smooth and invisible where necessary • Foot is stable, well attached and supports the form • Structure stays together in “bone” dry state • All crumbs and bumps are removed
- Add your texture to your pinch pots.
- You might find that it is easier to add the texture first, depending upon the type of texture you are using.
- Attach a foot that relates to and enhances your pinch pot form.
- Make sure your name and date are on the bottom
- Place the finished pitcher in the kiln room to dry out for firing.
CERAMICS II - CRITERIA FOR PITCHER
Communication and Expression - Brainstorm 15 different objects with texture
