Mutant Hybrid Sculpture

Mutant Hybrid Sculpture

Your Mission: Create three sculptural designs and attach them together to form a single sculptural form. Pay constant attention to the 3D concept: interesting from all sides.

Vocabulary: bisque, clay, green ware, joining, kiln, modeling, pinch, score, slip, stick, pulling a handle, wedging

Materials: Clay, different tools for texture and scoring and slip

Steps:
Phase 1 - Planning
  • Research: Spin the wheel three times. Whatever words you land on you will use to incorporate into a sculpture.
  • Brainstorm & Draw
  • 5-6 well developed drawings exploring your three words and how you can use them to make a sculpture
  • Demonstration: Creating a mock up
  • Create a mock up of the structure using the intended construction plans
  • iPod size sculpture
  • Try a few different options or varieties of designs and placements with textures
Dimensions & Requirements:
  • Plan Carefully
  • 3 items from your spin wheel (toy, vessel, man made, nature, texture, fantasy, science fiction, etc)
  • Hand built techniques; pinch, slab, coil and the wheel
  • The top form should have an interesting edge, lip, collar, or top that finishes your hybrid with a flare.
  • A foot that enhances your form, lifts it above the flat surface and stabilizes the form
  • Form is completed in glaze that enhances your form

Phase 2 - Construction
  • Get clay
  • Wedge clay
  • Begin by making one of your three parts
  • All walls should be even in thickness – no more than ¼ inch thick
  • Maintain a consistent quality in your forms as you construct
  • Once all your three parts are made, arrange them the way you have in your mock up to create an original form with an overall shape intriguing to the viewer.
Components need to visually transition from one shape to the next.

Remember:
        • Clay must remains moist during construction
• Walls must be even in thickness - no more than ¼ inch thickness
• Interior of sculptures are smooth
• Seams are smooth and invisible where necessary
• Foot is stable, well attached and supports the form
• Structure stays together in “bone” dry state
• All crumbs and bumps are removed

  • Attach a foot that relates to and enhances your form.
  • Make sure your name and date are on the bottom and title your piece.
  • Place the finished sculpture in the kiln room to dry out for firing.

CERAMICS II - CRITERIA FOR MUTANT HYBRID

Communication and Expression
  • Spin the wheel and come up with a sculpture based on the three words that have come up.
  • Brainstorm and Sketch out ways to create an interesting sculpture using these words.

Design and Composition
  • Mock up of sculpture (iPod sized) trying a variety of options for placement
  • Physical:
             • 3 sculptures attached to form a single sculpture
                  • 1/2 texture over entire surface
                -     textures may be repeated pattern
  • textures may use a pattern that changes as it moves over the surface
  • negative spaces may be incorporated into your form
  • you may use more than one texture but they must relate to one another
  • foot that enhances your form, lifts it above the flat surface and stabilizes the form
  • Form is completed in glaze that enhances your form
Methods, Tools, and Techniques
  • Proper use of all clay tools
  • Clay remains moist during construction
  • Craftsmanship
